Auditions for our Pantomime! Dick Whittington

Dick Whittington by James Barry

Directed by Debbie Murray and Hannah Rogers

Auditions: Wednesday 9 October -19:15 children, 19:45 adults.
Performance dates:
Fri 31 Jan 19:30
Sat 1 Feb 14:00 and 18:00

Join Dick and his loyal furry friend on their madcap adventures, as Dick seeks his fame and fortune in a London bedevilled by the sinister King Rat and his rabble of Revolting Rodents, also known as the Squeaky Blinders…

Characters:

Dick (M/F) – a very silly but well-meaning young man. Smitten with Alice. Must be able to adlib with the audience.

King Rat (M) – typical panto villain with loads of cheek and audience interaction. Must be able to adlib with the audience.

Fairy Bowbells (F) – tough straight-talking good fairy. Can definitely be any age!!

Cat (M/F) – Summoned up by the fairy to help Dick and keep him on the straight and narrow. Doesn’t talk for a while so a very visual role. (Ideally can dance, juggle or do something else pretty impressive to outshine Dick).
Children would be considered for this role so please let us know in advance if you would like to be considered, as you may be requested to stay on for the adult audition.

Alice Fitzwarren (F) – tougher than your average ‘princess’. Doesn’t suffer fools.

Dame Dolly Dumpling (M) – fabulous panto dame role. Smitten with Alderman Fitzwarren. Fun and flirty throughout.

Played by the same actor (M):
Alderman Fitzwarren – Doddery old gent. Desperately trying to avoid the advances of Dolly.
Captain Horatio Barnacle – Salty sea dog – typical pirate.
Sultan of Morocco – Suave sultan. A rich ladies man.
– This is a really fun role as the same actor plays all 3 characters. It should be made obvious that it’s the same person all roles and is commented on during the course of the play frequently by Dick. The others realise too, but try to cover for him and pretend that they don’t. Accents and characterisation should be over-the-top for each character, but don’t necessarily need to be convincing.

Chorus roles – both adult and children – Rats, Townsfolk, Sailors and Palace Servants

We would love to encourage a chorus of up to 12 children aged 9+. We will consider children younger than this if their parents are willing to chaperone them at every rehearsal (or be willing to participate in the production themselves).

Children that would like to be involved are encouraged to bring a poem or song to present to the audition panel, otherwise the casting panel will also have pieces available to perform on the night.

Rehearsals will start on Monday 4th Nov with a full cast readthrough. Rehearsals each Monday and Thursday thereafter with main cast, commencing at 19:30.
Chorus to join from Monday 25th Nov and every Monday thereafter, also Thursdays nearer the show.

We will need the usual backstage help so please let us know if you can assist. Please contact Hannah on hgmarks@gmail.com if you can’t make the audition but would like to be auditioned at another time prior to the main casting. The script can be read here – https://www.lazybeescripts.co.uk/Scripts/script.aspx?iSS=3525 but there will be some changes made to the final version before the rehearsals get underway.
