Audition Date: Wednesday 24th June, 19:45
Performance dates: 29/30/31 October
SYNOPSIS
Judy and Johnny lead a 1950s lifestyle, complete with the clothes, décor and appliances. She stays at home while Johnny works as an estate agent. But behind the gingham curtains, being a domestic goddess isn’t as easy as it looks.
Winner of 2019 Olivier award for best new comedy, this witty and sometimes poignant play explores gender roles and the right of women to choose how they live their lives – even if this is as a perfect housewife!
CHARACTERS
Judy – has left her well-paid job to recreate a fantasy of being a 1950’s housewife. She’s beginning to realise the challenges of maintaining this lifestyle in a modern world
Johnny – works as an estate agent, desperately hoping for promotion. He’s initially unaware of the financial problems Judy’s been hiding from him
Fran – is Judy’s easy-going best friend. She struggles to maintain her belief that her husband is a victim of the ‘me-too movement’
Marcus – is Fran’s husband. His interest in the 50s mainly centres around dancing. His attitude towards his female colleagues however also seems a throwback to another era
Sylvia – is Judy’s mother. She brought Judy up on a commune, and as a staunch feminist is highly critical of her romanticised view of the 1950s
Alex – is Johnny’s new boss. She is young and ambitious, and presents a threat to Judy and Johnny’s world
